“Baking like Grandma used to,” that is the phrase sisters Sandra
and Sheryl went by when they opened Flour Mill Bakery in 1996, and the phrase
they still go by now. Just off the beaten path, located in a strip mall off
State Road 26 in Rossville, is where the bakery sits. The Flour Mill Bakery has
a wide variety of homemade baked goods, but the biggest draw is the homemade
doughnuts. You will have no problem finding a doughnut for you, since they have
more than 50 in variety. I recommend trying the chocolate glazed, that is my favorite.
The menu doesn’t stop there, they have bulk foods ready to buy, like cheeses, pastas,
gluten free mixes and more. This is a great place to grab a quick sandwich, you
can find their lunch specials on their Facebook page. Flour Mill Bakery is a great
place to grab a cup of coffee and chat with a friend, they have lots of open tables
and seating.
I love the way the author describes the whaling captain, Reppi. “His jaw starts just below his ears and narrows sharply, giving him a wolfishly handsome look despite the fact he has lost all his teeth.” The descriptive words he uses really make Reppi and easy character to see in your mind.
I also really liked how the author spoke of how windy and treacherous the climate was there, and that whale hunting was a very dangerous thing to do. “..He (Reppi) had to learn that if the crew got stranded on the ice pack…” The author still put himself into the position willing, to get such a great story and experience. I think this story he did, shows how travel writers should be, in the action willing to jump in and experience it, because they love it, not doing it just for a story and actual cash.
The Big Leap
Theme: Change
I really like how this travel story is so much more than just travel. It is also about change. About a normal person becoming a mother to a six year old and a new family beginning. I love how she describes her daughter Lily with this quote, “I felt her pleasure in this instance- she had preferences, travel offers us the chance to constitute ourselves with taste: what we love and what we don’t.” This was when Lily talked about how she did not like snorkeling.
I also loved how the author described their first night at their destination. “The crescent moon was sharp, flowing pale, and the sky was like a naked version of our sky back home- as if its skin has been peeled away to show more stars.” I love how it is so descriptive but not hard to follow, she does not overuse adjectives, when in fact there are a lot in there.
My bus route would go right by it every day, the Pizza King in my small town. This small brick building attached to a hair salon was the hot spot for two middle school girls every Friday afternoon. I pull out my flip phone, text my neighbor and best friend Sarah and ask her if she wanted to partake in our weekly event together.
Of course she would say yes, we would beg our moms for $5 each. With money in hand we would get our Schwinn bicycles out of the garage, meet up in the driveway of my house, and start pedaling. We would take the back way, going through the alleys, always making sure to ride our bikes over the long drainage cover to make the fascinating noise, we always thought was so cool. We park the bikes out back, enter into Pizza King, put our $5 together, to make a hefty $10. By that point our mouths were watering for cheese fries and ice cream sandwiches.
After we ordered we would make our way to “our booth,” the one in the corner. Covered with a red and white checkered table cloth. We would sit in the booth, long ways on each side, with our feet dangling off the end. Usually Dr. Phil was on TV, so we would have the sound of Dr. Phil in the background while we talked about the newest gossip of the day. The food arrives, you can see the steam rolling off the cheese fries. We hurry and lick around the edges of our ice cream sandwiches fast, so we can indulge in our heavenly, and long waited, cheese fries.
This author was very descriptive in the way they described things. Here are some of the ways I was able to picture these things.
“I begrudgingly rush over to my parents’ room for..” I honestly had to look the word “begrudgingly” up in the dictionary. This describes how they reluctantly got out of bed.
“Expand into an amoebic white cloud as I pour it into a bucket..” You can actually see the author in your mind doing the process of pouring it into the bucket.
“The smell of curry, thyme, and white pepper WAFTING…” They describe the smells of their breakfast pass through the air, the word “wafting” gives a sense that the smell is moving through out the air.
“Balancing a stack of newspaper on his head with a few stuffed underneath both armpits..” This sentence shows the hustle and bustle on their way to school, and get a sense of what it is like there.
“We run across, the street like Frogger characters..” I looked this up and it is a arcade game. This is a good comparison to show the scurry they are in during their snack time.
Standing at 160 feet tall, made of brick and 4 bells is the symbolic Purdue Bell Tower.
The bell tower has been on Purdue’s campus since 1895, it was actually burnt down just four short days after it was completed. It was then rebuilt 9 bricks higher than the first model.
When strolling through Purdue’s campus you will hear a boisterous ding about every 30 minutes from the bell tower. The bell tower is said to be one or Purdue’s most important landmarks.
People stop and take pictures here, there are even myths that say if you walk under the bell tower you will not graduate in 4 years.

I really like the article, that highlighted some key things in Illinois. I think it was interesting because they explained how they really did not have much to bring people there, but that they were trying. The article did a really good job of explaining with lots of details the “big things” a person in town was building to attract people there. I think the author took a little bit of content that they had and really expanded it and made it interesting to read.
The second article had a lot more personality in it compared to the first article. While still being very informative, this article had some humor shine through, and I really like that. I liked how she gave recommendations and listed the people that she has talked to. I also liked the pictures in this article more than the first, it was nice that she was in some of the pictures, making it more personal.
Things I would have liked to see done better:
Although I really did like the Illinois article, I wish they would had added more images. I feel like the author did such a good job explaining things I was able to picture them in my head, but it would have been nice to see more of the “big things.”
When comparing the articles, I noticed that the second article could have gone into detail more about the experience. I feel like there were a lot of things covered on this article compared to the first article, so the author did not use as many adjectives as the first one.
Types of Cites :
When comparing the two articles, I noticed they are on very different cites, the Illinois article is on The Chicago Tribune. The aperitivo article was on a wine tasting website.
Which one I liked better :
Although I really like both of the articles, I think I liked the “A Guide to the best Aperitivo in Montalcino, Italy.” I think it was easier to read with the images corresponding to the content. I really liked the personality that came through compared to the other article.
Four generations and original recipes: that is one to describe Igloo Frozen Custard. This family owned business has been around since 1932.
When traveling to Lafayette, Igloo Frozen Custard should be a place you should cross off your must-do list. Here are five reasons why:
Igloo Drinks
1. Drinks
You see it everywhere, the signature picture of someone holding their Igloo cup. Igloo is a place known for their flavored cokes. You can order anything from a vanilla coke to a marshmallow coke. Igloo also has an original drink, “The Fruit Drink,” which is a mix of pineapple, orange, and lemon juices.

2. Atmosphere
When you walk through the doors here you will notice it is a lot different than any other place in town. The old bar stools and booths give a sense of nostalgia to Igloo. This is a place in town people will park their cars in the parking lot and hang out on a Friday night. The atmosphere is fun and inviting.
3. The Food
In the mood for some fried pickles? Or maybe a tenderloin? This is the place to grab a quick snack or a meal. Their selections remind me of a mix of newer recipes and old-fashioned diner favorites. I had fried pickles when I was visiting Igloo, and my friend had cheese fries and we could not complain. They have a vast menu of food to pick from; everyone can find something they like here. Their menu has anything from fried mushrooms to their Igloo salad.

4. Perfect for everyone
Igloo is a great place for everyone. This is a fun place to bring the kids for an afterschool snack, or even have a girls night. Igloo is also a good spot for a quick ice cream date with your special someone. There is even a patio section with an ordering window, so you can bring your furry friends and have an ice cream cone outside.
Igloo’s Frozen Custard
5. The Custard
Igloo Frozen Custard has its name for a reason. They still to this day use the family recipes their grandparents that first owned it used. They make in house flavors daily like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, birthday cake, and more. I had their chocolate when I was there, and it was very good.
Igloo has two locations:
4909 Tazer Dr Lafayette, IN 47905 United States
1817 Troxel Ct Lafayette, IN 47909 United States
After you have had your Igloo Frozen Custard experience, search the web for Home of Purdue Blog for more fun things to do in Lafayette.
Most of us walk right by the statue of John Purdue to and from class, but do we really understand the significance of the statue?
John Purdue was one of the people that put up his wealth to make Purdue University what it is. He was a very wealthy business man and also a teacher at one point in his life, so education was one of his core values.
John died here in Lafayette in 1876, this was the first day of the third year of Purdue being open. This bold statement of his statue has been on Purdue’s campus since April 2013.
If you are new with the campus you will find the tribute to John Purdue in Memorial Mall, just south of the Memorial Fountain and John Purdue’s grave.
When you look at the bench that the statue of John Purdue sits on, you will see ” “For John Purdue, education was the flame that lit the world.” inscribed. The statue of John Purdue is holding a book in one hand and a cane in the other, his colleges said this is how he walked through campus.
Stop by Purdue University’s Memorial Mall to visit John Purdue’s statue!
