Most of us walk right by the statue of John Purdue to and from class, but do we really understand the significance of the statue?

John Purdue was one of the people that put up his wealth to make Purdue University what it is. He was a very wealthy business man and also a teacher at one point in his life, so education was one of his core values.

John died here in Lafayette in 1876, this was the first day of the third year of Purdue being open. This bold statement of his statue has been on Purdue’s campus since April 2013.

If you are new with the campus you will find the tribute to John Purdue in Memorial Mall, just south of the Memorial Fountain and John Purdue’s grave.

When you look at the bench that the statue of John Purdue sits on, you will see ” “For John Purdue, education was the flame that lit the world.” inscribed. The statue of John Purdue is holding a book in one hand and a cane in the other, his colleges said this is how he walked through campus.

Stop by Purdue University’s Memorial Mall to visit John Purdue’s statue!
